Opening on Veteran's Day November 11, 2011 the drama "A Piece of My Heart" by Shirley Lauro will be performed by the Athens High School Theater to honor our area veterans.  The November 11 performance will begin at 7:30.  The show will also run November 12 at 7:30 PM and a 2:00 matinee on Sunday November 14.  Performances will take place at the Athens High School auditorium.

     The play is a moving collection of stories based on the book "A PIECE OF MY HEART: The stories of Twenty-six American Women who served in Vietnam" by Keith Walker.  Playwright Shirley Lauro retells the stories which vividly reflect the times and the people.  Each character is represented before, during and after their tour; they represent the military as well as the Red Cross and USO.  The play ends with a moving reunion at The Wall in Washington.

    On Thursday November 10 we invite all area veterans to attend a reception in their honor at Athens High School at 6:30.  Following the reception all are welcome to attend the final rehearsal/preview of the student production.  After the show, veterans are encouraged to stay and visit with the cast.  These students are anxious to share their experience of preparing this show and to hear your comments.

    We will pay tribute to and offer free admission to all veterans who attend with an Athens High School Student throughout the run of the show, November 11, 12 and13.  We are honoring the experiences of all who have served in war zones with particular support for women who have served in any capacity in the chaotic venues of American wars.  The show reflects the period of the Vietnam War and captures the rhythm, music and soul of the era.

    It is my hope that this shared experience will provide a deeper understanding for our students of what it means to serve in a time of war, and the importance of Veterans' Day.  I believe that our veterans will be uplifted by the interest and passion of these young performers.

    We are also proud to celebrate the Vietnam Wall in Washington DC.  The wall was designed by our own Athens High alumna Maya Lin.
